Course Description

As accountants and professionals, upholding ethical standards is not only a responsibility but also a commitment to maintaining the trust and integrity of the financial system.

Why is it that when corporate fraud is perpetrated, there always seem to be a lot of good people who knew about it and went along with it? This phenomenon is often driven by rationalizations that disguise unethical behavior. In this course, we will delve into the intricacies of these rationalizations and explore ways to combat them, with a focus on the role of accountants and their duty to uphold integrity and independence.

Companies will often try to invoke the "Single loose cannon" defense, but in reality, we all know that, in a modern control environment, many people would have had an understanding of what was going on. Why don’t these people act to stop what will inevitably become a fraud, a corporate scandal, or worse? Why don’t they speak up – to the Ethics function, to finance, to audit? Why do they allow the situation to continue – or worse, actively participate?

The reasons are complex, but usually have to do with individuals rationalizing away the bad behavior with one of the common ethical red flags: “It’s not that bad”, “No one’s getting hurt”, “Everyone else is doing it”, or, “It’s someone else’s job to deal with this”.
