Conference Overview

Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”

Have you considered what will happen to your money after you’re gone?

Plenty of people focus most of their energy on making more money now, and for good reason. Estate planning tends to take a backseat to seemingly more pressing matters of the here and now.

But you can’t live forever, so you need to make some vital financial and personal decisions now. There’s no better time than right now to begin developing your estate plan.

Estate planning provides families a great opportunity to be prepared for unexpected incapacity and death. Whether we are 20 and just beginning a career or 50 and seeking to retire, we must all seek better methods for planning our futures. Simply put, why to bother with estate planning – easy, you get to plan where your money goes, how it gets invested, how to minimize tax implications and heaven forbid, incapacity or death, someone else gets your money other than Uncle Sam.

This Online CPE/CE Estate Planning Course is meant to illustrate the tools to handle the estate planning process and review some challenges.

Estate planning has many intricacies that many including clients do not want to deal with. As a tax planner or someone involved with those that seek retirement, future planning is crucial for creating liquidity and a legacy and this CPE course on estate planning helps you deal with that. An estate plan can include many different types of documents, including wills and trusts. There are so many different tools that will allow you to have a comprehensive and customized estate plan.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”

Life presents all of us with circumstances – some good – some bad. We all believe that we will live forever, healthy and vibrant, yet, life as some of us know throws us all curveballs. Whether we are 20 and just beginning a career or 50 and seeking to retire, we must all seek better methods for planning our futures.

Why bother with estate planning?

It is easy.

You get to plan where your money goes.

The distribution of funds and assets to charity is a great way to improve quality of life outcomes based on worth and need. Along with making the world a better place, you can benefit greatly through considered long-term financial planning. Whether you want to transfer funds outright, distribute money efficiently over time, or set up a binding trust arrangement, various techniques are available to ensure the seamless distribution of your funds and enduring promotion of your legacy.

There are many charitable giving techniques available to your clients when they have farm property and commodities. These charitable giving techniques can be used to reduce income taxes and estate taxes. Experience and research confirm that very few financial, legal or tax professionals utilize charitable planning strategies to help their clients improve the outcomes of various business issues.

In this CE/CPE tax session, we will review the various available techniques and the recent perils in this area, and tax proposals by the administration.

Learning Objectives

  • To analyze the tax aspects of current giving techniques and planned giving techniques.
  • To discuss the requirements to get the charitable deduction and review recent tax court cases.
  • To explore conservation easements and how to do it right.
  • To review the perils and opportunities of charitable giving with commodities.

Ask anyone who has never been an Executor of a will and they’ll tell you it’s an honor.

Ask anyone who has already done the job and they’ll tell you it was more time-consuming than they could have imagined.

The role of the Conservator is even less forgiving. Questions about what to expect may elicit blank looks; not many estate professionals work through the process often enough to know the answers. The Conservator has many broad powers as well as some limitations; because this role is court-appointed there are legal filings required and court oversight on some actions. The seemingly daily decisions regarding the person and the estate can feel overwhelming and relentless. Despite the numerous responsibilities, it is an important role, nonetheless.

This CPE session looks at the general and specific responsibilities of the role and offers a look at the expectations a Conservator will face, from someone in the trenches. Whether you are an appointed Conservator or counsel people who are, this session will inform and instruct you using real-world situations.

This CPE session is led by Ilene Slatko, a speaker and serial entrepreneur who currently coaches clients working through the long tail of administrative and financial tasks involved in the estate process.

Wherever you are on the estate planning spectrum, this interactive CPE session will guide you in managing expectations for Conservators

Learning Objectives

  • To explain the role of the Conservator, legally and practically.
  • To discuss what filings may be required.
  • To explore the resources and costs an estate could bear.
  • To inspect the wide range of tasks that may come with the role.
