Are you a busy professional looking to stay on top of your Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) Continuing Education (CE) requirements for 2024? Our comprehensive overview is here to help. In this blog, we break down the latest updates to the CFP® CE requirements, ensuring you have the information you need to maintain your certification efficiently and effectively. Stay compliant and informed with our concise and easy-to-follow summary.
Every reporting period, Certified Financial Planner® professionals are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE):
2 hours of ethics CE approved by the CFP® Board
28 hours of CE covering at least one of the CFP® Board's Principal Topics
CFP® Board accepts the following Principal Knowledge Topics for Continuing Education credit.
Professional Conduct and Regulation
General Principles of Financial Planning
Education Planning
Risk Management and Insurance Planning
Investment Planning
Tax Planning
Retirement Savings and Income Planning
Estate Planning
It is recommended that CFP® professionals fulfill their CE requirement by attending registered CE programs. Instructing or authoring CE programs may also qualify for CE credit.
NOTE: CFP® professionals must earn CE hours during their current reporting period. Additional CE hours cannot be applied to subsequent reporting periods.
CFP® Certification requires a 2-hour CFP® Board Ethics program that has been pre-approved by the CFP® Board. CFP® Board’s CE standards allow non-approved ethics programs to qualify for general CE credit - however, non-approved ethics programs do not qualify for CFP® Board’s Ethics CE requirement.
The certification period lasts from 1 January to 31 December each year. Each year, CFP® certification renewal applications must be submitted by 31 December with the appropriate fees.
If CFP® certificants fail to renew their certification by 31 December, they can apply before the end of February of the following year without seeking reinstatement, but a late fee applies.
By logging into their My Certification account, CFP® professionals can view CE hours reported to their account.
In two weeks after completing a CE program, registered CE sponsors must submit attendance records to the CFP® Board. Every time CE credit is applied to a CFP® professional's account, the CFP® Board sends an email confirmation.
Amidst these changes, CFPs® need a reliable and efficient way to fulfill their CE requirements while gaining valuable insights and skills to enhance their practice.

Unfortunately, no. In order to qualify for CE hours, you must earn them in the current reporting period. A reporting period may not carry over hours completed in excess of 30 hours. There may not be a split of CE hours earned for the same program between two reporting periods. During the same reporting period, CFP® professionals cannot earn CE credit for the same program more than once.
For CE credit, programs must meet the requirements of the CFP® Board. It is not the responsibility of the CFP® Board to determine if activities fulfill the CE requirements of other designations or licenses.
In conclusion, the CFP® CE requirements for 2024 reflect the evolving landscape of financial planning and the need for professionals to continually enhance their skills and knowledge.
