MARYLAND TAX PREPARERS (MRTP) CE REQUIREMENT OVERVIEW

CE Requirements
16 hours of CE are required every 2 year
License Renewal Period
Renewal of license is based on the date of registration
CE Reporting Cycle
The reporting period is from January 1st to December 31st each year.
Ethics Requirement
A minimum of two (2) hours of acceptable continuing education in professional conduct and ethics
Carry Over Credits
MRTPs cannot carry forward credits to the next reporting cycle.

What are CE Requirements for Maryland Tax Preparers (MRTP) Professionals?

MRTPs have to complete at least 16 hours of acceptable continuing education upon registration renewal date with a minimum of two (2) hours of acceptable continuing education that may be satisfied by a federal or state course in ethics and four (4) hours must be in Maryland state tax-related subjects. myCPE also provides you with an MRTP package that will assist you to satisfy your CE requirement.

  • Taxation;
  • Practitioner ethics;
  • Accounting and payroll theory;
  • Estate, tax, or investment planning;
  • Computer technology; and
  • Others, if the applicant can demonstrate a direct relationship between the course and individual income tax preparation.

myCPE Package for Maryland Tax Preparers (MRTP)  meets all the CE requirements of Maryland Tax Preparers i.e.

  • State Tax Course - 2 hours
  • Tax Ethics - 2 hours
  • Federal Tax Law - 12 hours

There are the following minimum CE requirements in a particular subject area:-

  • 12 hours of Federal tax law,
  • 2 hours of Ethics and
  • 2 hours for State tax

The following are the qualifying learning activities:
  • Professional development programs of recognized national and state tax preparation organizations
  • Technical sessions at meetings of recognized national and state tax preparation organizations
  • Noncredit short courses at universities and colleges
  • Formal, organized, in-firm education programs
  • Programs offered by other recognized professional or industrial organizations
  • University and college course
  • Services as a teacher, lecturer, or discussion leader

The license can be renewed by payment of a renewal fee of $100.

Maryland Tax Preparers (MRTP) can complete 100% of the total required CE credit hours via self-study courses. i.e., MRTP can complete all 16 hours via self-study courses from IRS-approved CE sponsors. As myCPE is approved by IRS (Sponsor id GEHNZ) our Package for MRTP Professionals is 100% compliant with that requirement.

Continuing education hours earned in excess of the 16 hours for a 2-year registration term shall not be credited towards the continuing education requirement for a subsequent 2-year registration term.

A renewal applicant shall provide a certification of compliance with renewal requirements in an appropriate form specified by the Board. The following minimum information concerning each continuing education course shall be maintained by the renewal applicant for 4 years from the date of renewal:

  • Sponsoring organization;
  • Course location;
  • Program title;
  • Topical course outline;
  • Content description;
  • Dates attended;
  • Hours claimed; and
  • Information reflecting the expertise of the instructor in the subject matter.

myCPE provides courses that are approved for continuing education credits by IRS. Based on the guidelines issued by these boards regarding Continuing Education Requirements, we recommend the programs/ webinars be suitable for MRTP specified in each webinar. However, it will be the responsibility of each attendee to ensure that they are eligible for the Continuing  Education Credits based on their occupation/ job profile, knowledge requirements as well as guidelines laid down by their regulatory board before registering for the webinars.
