An estate tax is a levy on estates whose value exceeds an exclusion limit set by law. Only the amount that exceeds that minimum threshold is subject to tax. Assessed by the federal government and about a dozen state governments, these levies are calculated based on the estate's fair market value (FMV) rather than what the deceased originally paid for its assets. The tax is levied by the state in which the deceased person was living at the time of their death.
President Theodore Roosevelt argued for the estate tax to Congress in 1906: “the inheritance of those swollen fortunes which it is the certainty of no benefit to this country to perpetuate”
The typical objection to the estate tax is that it destroys productive capital investments (discourages investment).
The estate tax is imposed on the decedent and is paid from the decedent’s estate.

Bringing 47 years of experience with tax consulting, estate planning, and employee benefits to his work as an independent consultant, Michael is the owner of MIRANDA CPA & Consulting LLC in Sioux Falls, SD. His tax practice focuses on corporate, individual, estate and gift, and tax accounting. As part of his IRS representation practice, Michael has worked with the National Office to obtain private letter rulings and exempt organization determination letters for clients, in addition to numerous EPCRS submissions and audits. Michael spent much of his career as a CPA with a regional CPA firm located in Northwestern Iowa, retiring after 27 years as a senior manager-shareholder with said firm. Prior to this experience, he was a Tax Specialist with a Big 8 accounting firm in their South Bend and Minneapolis offices, providing tax and estate planning for individuals and small to medium-sized businesses. He has earned professional designations including CPA, QKA, and AEP and through professional memberships with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the American Society of Pension and Professional Actuaries (ASPPA), National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA), and the National Association of Estate Planning Councils (NAEPC). Michael resides in Sioux Falls, SD with his wife Jeanette.

There are quite a few selections of courses and the unlimited price is great. The courses are easy to select and the reminders for upcoming webinars are helpful. I also like the variety of credit hours from short webinars to longer ones. And thank you for the one credit one meal program. The presenter had great knowledge of the material and did a wonderful job explaining it.
Instructor was very knowledgeable and explain each topic in great detail. Wish power point were more inclusive of notes and every key point that he discusses during the presentation. You really have to be taking notes on your own. Only power point slides won't help
