Learning Objectives

  • Identify why capital campaigns create communication stress tests for nonprofit organizations.
  • Recognize how proactive narrative and reactive communications support campaign momentum and reputation protection.
  • Explain the major phases of a campaign communications roadmap from planning through follow-up.
  • Apply stakeholder segmentation to tailor messaging while preserving the core case for support.
  • Assess crisis readiness elements, board alignment, and communication risks involving leadership, operations, media, and public sentiment.

Course Overview

Capital campaigns are high-visibility, high-risk moments for nonprofit organizations. They place the organization under a brighter spotlight, invite narrative scrutiny, and require leaders to maintain confidence with donors, board members, media, corporate partners, and the broader public.

This course introduces a practical communications approach built around two connected needs: the narrative that drives awareness, momentum, and donor engagement, and the shield that protects reputation when challenges arise. Participants will examine why communications planning matters, how campaign messaging moves through planning, quiet, kickoff, public launch, and follow-up phases, and how stakeholder segmentation helps tailor messages without losing the core case for support.

Major Topic:

  • Capital campaign communication risks
  • Proactive narrative and reactive communications
  • Campaign communications roadmap
  • Stakeholder segmentation and case for support
  • Crisis readiness and holding statements
  • Board alignment and trust protection

Participants will also explore reactive communication readiness, including common scenarios involving leadership and staff, operations, media and social channels, and public sentiment. The course emphasizes crisis readiness, board alignment, message discipline, and consistent proactive communication so nonprofit leaders can build momentum while protecting trust.
