Congress created the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) in 1986, and it became effective on January 1, 1987. Since that time, new Federal civilian employees who have retirement coverage are covered by FERS.
Welcome to the confusing word salad of civil service retirement benefits. With a robust medical and financial package, new FERS employees can target a healthy retirement, especially if they start planning now. Understanding all of the puzzle pieces and how they work together is key.
This CE/CPE course introduces the major puzzle pieces, explains how they work together, and outlines the steps to take now for a comprehensive retirement plan later.
FERS, however, does not cover military personnel or employees of state or local governments. Employees under FERS receive retirement benefits from three sources: the basic benefit plan, Social Security, and the Thrift Savings Plan, or TSP.

She has been a speaker at conferences including the Army Materiel Command Women’s Financial Day, Delaware Women’s Conference, and numerous youth financial literacy programs. Ms. Slatko is currently the host of a weekly Roku and Apple TV show called, The *It Show, the first financial program designed specifically for young women. In addition, she has been the Director of Training for companies in the financial and real estate fields.
