On March 6, 2024, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) made a significant announcement regarding the adoption of new rules aimed at standardizing and enhancing climate-related disclosures for public companies and in public offerings.
The SEC's decision to implement these rules underscores a pivotal step towards bolstering transparency and accountability regarding climate-related risks within capital markets. Before finalizing the rules, the SEC meticulously reviewed over 24,000 comment letters, including more than 4,500 unique letters, submitted in response to the proposed release issued in March 2022.
Even though the focus of this course is on the actual SEC rules and climate-related disclosure requirements, we must take some time to establish a grounding that will help you better understand some of the requirements discussed later in this course. That said, our focus in this section is on establishing a good understanding of some key terms you’ll likely come across when reviewing the climate-related disclosure requirements.
Join this CPE Accounting course, which provides a high-level overview of the climate-related disclosure requirements along with information about when public companies must start including these disclosures in their respective filings.
