California CPAs have the following requirements as per the California Board of Accountancy:

  • 80 hours every two years, with a minimum of 20 hours per year.
  • At least 40 hours in technical subjects, with a minimum of 12 hours per year.
  • At least 2 hours in regulatory review course every 6 years.
  • 4 hours of ethics learning every two years in a qualifying ethics course.
  • The entire requirement of 80 hours of CPE can be completed through self-study courses.
  • Minimum CPE requirement in particular subject area: 
    1. If CPA is subject to the Government Auditing or Accounting and Auditing, he must complete 24 hours of CE in Accounting (Governmental), Auditing (Governmental), or related subjects.
    2. If CPA is subject to the Preparation Engagement, he must complete 8 hours of CE in preparation engagements or Accounting and Auditing.
    3. If CPA is engaged in planning, directing, performing substantial portions of fieldwork, or reporting on an audit, review, compilation, or attestation service, he must complete at least 24 hours of CE in Accounting, auditing, or related subjects.
    4. In addition to the above requirements, CPAs who fall into one of the above 3 categories must complete 4 hours related to the prevention, detection, and/or reporting of fraud affecting financial statements.
    5. A minimum of 40 hours must be completed in technical subject areas of accounting, auditing & tax, with a minimum of 12 hours per year.
  • California CPAs can take a maximum of 40 hours of CPE from Non-technical subjects of Marketing, Communication, Business Management, etc. 
  • The California board does not accept CE in the following subject areas: self-realization, spirituality, personal health and/or fitness, sports and recreation, personal development, motivation, spirituality, foreign languages, cultures, etc.
  • CPE Reporting Cycle of California CPAs is the first day of the month following the birth month to the last business day of the birth month biennially, odd, or even year based on the license expiration date.
  • Courses shall be taken from CPE providers approved by NASBA.

80 hours of CPE are required during the two-year period immediately preceding the license expiration date out of which 20 hours of CPE must be completed during each year of the two-year renewal period.

3. Once you have watched the whole video and answered all the review questions, the Final Quiz will open up. You need to score more than 70% in the Final Quiz to avail your CPE credit. Multiple attempts are allowed for submitting Review and Final Quiz questions.
4. Once you have completed the Review and Final quiz questions, you shall be able to download the credit certificate from the ‘My Certificates’ section. Kindly ensure you have allowed Multiple File download from your web browser to download all certificates
5. You can download the individual certificate from your "Account" as well as from this page once you complete a particular course. Also, you can download "Consolidated Certificate" from the package page or from your account.
A Self-study webinar is a recorded video (If it’s a recording of a live webinar you may see polling questions appearing on the screen. You do not need to answer the polling questions and just let the video play). Do not fast forward if you fast forward we may not be able to capture your watch time and you may be required to watch it multiple times. In order to avail your credits for the self-study webinar, you need to answer the review questions correctly and complete the entire video. Once you have done that, the Final Quiz will open up in which you need to score a minimum 70% to qualify for the credit. You can attempt multiple times for answering the review questions and Final quiz questions. Once you have completed the Review and Final quiz questions, you shall be able to download the credit certificate from ‘My Certificates’ section.
