CE for California Registered Tax Preparers (CRTP) Professionals

The California Tax Education Council (CTEC) was established by the California State Legislature to promote competent tax preparation within the State of California. CRTPs need to complete CTEC CE requirements to renew their registration every year.

As per the standards defined in Circular 230, allowable course subjects are:

  • Federal Taxation
  • Federal tax-related matters, such as Accounting, Tax preparation software, Taxation
  • Federal ethics
  • California Taxation

However, the primary focus of the course must be Federal tax.

There are the following minimum CE requirements in a particular subject area:-

  • 10 hours of federal tax law,

The license can be renewed by payment of a renewal fee of $33.

California Tax Professionals (CRTP)can complete 100% of the total required CE credit hours via self-study courses. i.e., CRTP can complete all 20 hours via self-study courses from CTEC-approved CE sponsors as myCPE is approved by CTEC (Sponsor id 6273). Our Package courses are ment for 100% compliant with CTEC continuing education requirements.

CRTPs need to

  • Complete CTEC renewal requirements 20 hours (10 hours of federal tax law, 3 hours of federal tax update, 2 hours of Ethics, and 5 hours for State) of continuing tax education each year
  • Maintain a valid PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) from the IRS
  • Maintain a $5,000 tax preparer bond
  • Renew the registration by October 31st of each year
  • Renewal Registration with CTEC $33


Credits may not be carried over from one certification cycle to the next reporting cycle.

  • CRTPs status will be changed to expired until they complete the required education and complete the renewal application. They will also need to pay an $88.00 fee, ($33.00 registration fee and $55.00 late fee). Their status will remain expired until they complete CTEC renewal requirements, and their application is processed by CTEC.
  • Their bond may be canceled by their insurance/surety company and a tax preparer may not conduct business without a current surety bond.
  • CRTPs who do not renew their registration by January 15th of each year will have to retake the 60-hour qualifying education course by an approved education provider and register as a new tax preparer with CTEC.

CTEC Approved Providers are required to electronically submit their hours to CTEC.

myCPE provides courses that are approved for continuing education credits by NASBA. Based on the guidelines issued by these boards regarding Continuing Education Requirements, we recommend the programs/ webinars to be suitable for NASBA specified in each webinar. However, it will be the responsibility of each attendee to ensure that they are eligible for the Continuing Education Credits based on their occupation/ job profile, knowledge requirements as well as guidelines laid down by their regulatory board before registering for the webinars.
