Partnerships file an information return to report their income, gains, losses, deductions, credits, etc. A partnership does not pay tax on its income but "passes through" any profits or losses to its partners. Partners must include partnership items on their tax or information returns.
If your business is a partnership or LLC, Form 1065 is one of the most important annual tax forms you must complete for the IRS. When you request a partnership extension, your LLC will get an automatic five-month extension to file Form 1065. File an extension, file the return, and then if you find errors, a missed election, etc. you can file a superseding tax return before the due date of the return – not an amendment.
A superseding return is a return filed after the originally-filed return and filed within the filing period (including extensions). A timely and properly filed superseding return will be treated as the original return for the tax period, and it eliminates the possibility of penalties or other action based on missing information.
Join this CPE Nano learning course by Jason Dinesen to understand the tax tip of extension of tax returns and superseding returns.
