In 1976, HRCI became the first internationally recognized certification organization for the HR profession. Till then, HR professionals must earn certification. However, maintaining certification is not just a badge of honor. It is mandatory to recertify every three years to maintain HRCI certification. Getting ready for 2024, let's look at the steps you can take to meet HRCI recertification requirements without a hitch.
NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies) accredited the following qualifications: aPHR®, PHR®, PHRca®, PHRi™, SPHRi™, SPHR®, and GPHR®. Over 300 programs from 120 organizations in various fields are accredited by NCCA, an independent, third-party organization.
The recently introduced aPHRiTM meets the NCCA's high-quality standards. Certification programs must conform to rigorous standards to earn and maintain accreditation.
The SPHR®, SPHRiTM, GPHR®, and PHRca® designations differ in the experience required to pass the exam. This expertise is also included in the standards for recertifying these designations.
Human resources professionals play an essential role in promoting ethical practices at work today. As of January 1, 2021, all certificates (except Lifetime and Emeritus) must complete one ethics credit toward their total 45/60 recertification credits. By requiring this requirement, we ensure that our certificates remain aware of important ethical practices and behaviors. While entering the activity, there is no particular "Ethics Credit" designation to choose from.
NOTE: Ethics credits are part of the UNCHANGED recertification requirements. For PHR®/PHRiTM/SPHR®/SPHRiTM/GPHR®/PHRca®, the total is 60 credits.
Human Resources professionals must earn a specific number of recertification credits throughout their three-year cycle to recertify. The following activities can be used to earn these credits:
Attending training courses, workshops, seminars, and conferences that are offered by accredited suppliers such as MY-CPE (Offer HRCI-Approved Courses)
One can also earn RCH credits by delivering courses on HR-specific topics and ethics. These courses must meet HRCI standard guidelines. The courses can be in any form, such as Articles, eBooks, Live Courses, On-Demand Courses, Conferences, or Podcasts.
Serving in leadership positions within HR organizations or associations, such as SHRM and local HR chapters.
As soon as HRCI receives and uploads your exam results, your recertification account will be created.
The last day of your birth month marks the end of your certification cycle. Depending on when you earn it, it may take you longer than three years to earn your initial certification.
HRCI will auto-create the recertification requirements for your designation in your profile 12 months after the cycle start date, and you may submit your recertification application at that time.
During the current recertification cycle, you must earn three recertification credits.
Following the end of the previous cycle, you will begin the next 3-year recertification cycle.
By submitting a single recertification application, you can recertify two (or more) designations or more in one cycle over three years.
Let’s know with an example:
CASE 1: Your cycle end date will remain the same if your recertifying month is the same as your birth month.
Test Date: 5/12/2022
3 Year Cycle: 5/31/2026
Birth month: May
Birthday Rule Adjustment: 5/31/2026
CASE 2: If your recertifying month falls earlier than your birth month, your cycle end date will be delayed until the end of your birth month the following year.
Test Date: 5/12/2022
3-year Cycle: 5/31/2026
Birth month: July
Birthday Rule adjustment: 7/31/2026
Yes! A maximum of 15 RCH Credits can be carried Forward.
In HRCI®, certificates have the option of carrying over surplus recertification credits. A certificate's active three-year recertification cycle must contain at least 12 months of surplus activities.
If your designation is suspended, a USD 100 suspended fee is automatically added to the application review fees.
Do you need to submit suspended fees when you can earn your RCH credits more easily? MY-CPE is the right choice for you!

After passing the test, you will receive your aPHR certification. You must earn 45 recertification credits every three years or retake the exam to maintain your aPHR credential.
The maximum number of credits HRCI professionals can carry to the next reporting cycle is 15. During your three-year recertification cycle, you must have actively earned surplus credits.
