"It is what it advertised to be”
It is what it advertised to be. Professional quality training and CPE tracking and certificates; systems knows AZ CPA CPE requirements and categories. I've needed help on several occasions and the assistance was quick and effective; however, there were some problems with data entry. The assistance sometimes asks for input, but when I try to type it is dissallowed for some reason. On several occasions I had to close the popup to get it out of my way.

Artificial intelligence is no longer a "future" technology; it is already a core part of the modern accounting workflow. From automating bank reconciliations to providing real-time financial analysis, AI is driving measurable efficiency gains, with some organizations saving over seven days on month-end closes. The global AI accounting market is even projected to reach $10.87 billion by 2026.
However, while the opportunities are massive, the risks are equally significant. AI in accounting brings major risks like data security breaches, algorithmic bias, regulatory non-compliance, and over-reliance on automated outputs.
For accounting professionals, understanding these limitations isn't just about technical curiosity - it’s about protecting your firm’s accuracy, reputation, and client trust.
At MYCPE ONE, we believe in effective AI adoption and are early advocates of AI-focused CPE courses. What it requires is just understanding both its potential and the risks associated with it: professional knowledge and prudence.
Here is a breakdown of the critical AI risks every professional needs to navigate in today’s landscape.
The most widely discussed risk is the potential for AI to generate "hallucinations"-outputs that sound authoritative and confident but are factually incorrect or fabricated. Because AI tools process data rather than understand context, they can easily misinterpret incomplete datasets.
In accounting, where accuracy is fundamental, a single incorrect input can scale across automated workflows, impacting multiple financial reports and strategic decisions. Unchecked errors can lead to serious financial inaccuracies and misleading audit documentation.
Accounting firms handle vast amounts of sensitive financial records and personal client data. AI systems often require access to this information to function, which increases exposure to breaches and unauthorized access.
Data security is currently cited as the top concern for tax and accounting professionals. Beyond standard breaches, AI is being used to craft more sophisticated cyberattacks. For instance, scammers have used AI-generated deepfakes of executives to trick employees into unauthorized multi-million-dollar transfers.
Many AI models operate as "black boxes," meaning you can see the input and the result, but the internal logic of the output remains hidden. This lack of transparency is a major hurdle in a regulated profession where you must be able to defend audit conclusions and explain financial decisions to stakeholders. If an output cannot be explained or traced, it cannot be fully trusted for high-stakes reporting.
There is a growing danger of over-reliance on automation. As teams become more dependent on AI to categorize transactions or draft memos, they may skip vital validation steps or experience a decline in critical thinking skills.
AI lacks the human intuition, ethical reasoning, and nuanced understanding required for complex tasks like audit evaluations or revenue recognition decisions. Professionals must remember that AI should support judgment, not replace it.
Accounting is governed by strict standards like GAAP and IFRS, as well as data protection laws such as GDPR and CCPA. AI systems must be carefully configured. Align AI with these evolving regulations; the AI-driven decisions must align with accounting standards. Failure to maintain proper audit trails or ensure reporting accuracy through AI tools can lead to legal penalties and significant reputational damage.
An organized way to implement AI in accounting opens multifold challenges. Despite the rapid adoption of AI, only about 25% of firms have a formal training program for their employees on how to use these tools safely, and how to utilize its potential to a full extent. Without proper governance and "AI literacy," teams are more likely to input sensitive data into unapproved platforms or fail to spot subtle errors in AI-generated drafts.
So, what are the best practices for AI risk management? Managing these risks doesn't mean avoiding AI; it means adopting a structured and professional approach. Understand what AI can do and what can't. Not all the accounting tasks are meant for AI.
Financial professionals are the custodians of the Firms for key insight and sensitive business and financial information. Because finance involves accuracy, confidentiality, significant decisions and accountability, using AI carelessly can seriously affect work quality, data security and trust. Understanding risks allows AI to be used safely.
AI is transforming accounting from manual bookkeeping into a more strategic, analytical role. However, the professionals who thrive in this new era will be those who pair their technical domain expertise with healthy skepticism. By building a foundation of risk-aware operations, your firm can capture the efficiency of AI without compromising the integrity that defines our profession.
Automation follows fixed, rules-based scripts for repetitive work, whereas AI utilizes machine learning and natural language processing to adapt to context and complete complex reasoning tasks.
Unlike manual methods that rely on 5-10% sampling, AI enables 100% population reviews, scanning every transaction for anomalies, duplicate payments, and outliers that break established behavioral patterns
Ethical risks involve algorithmic bias, where flawed historical datasets lead to unfair financial outcomes, and a lack of accountability if AI-driven decisions cannot be ethically defended to stakeholders.
No; while AI excels at data processing, it lacks the nuanced judgment essential for navigating complex ethical considerations and building the enduring, trust-based relationships that define the accounting profession
Beyond compliance penalties, research indicates each manual correction for an automated error costs roughly $53, making high-volume inaccuracies a significant drain on firm operating margins and overall profitability.
