Learning Objectives

  • Explain the components of EBITDA and how the metric is calculated from financial statements.
  • Identify the differences between EBITDA, net income, operating income, and free cash flow.
  • Recognize common adjustments used in adjusted EBITDA and the risks associated with aggressive normalization.
  • Analyze how EBITDA is used in valuation, financial modeling, credit analysis, and M&A decisions.
  • Evaluate warning signs that may indicate EBITDA growth is not supported by underlying cash flow or financial health.
  • Apply EBITDA alongside other financial metrics to support clearer and more responsible financial analysis.

Course Overview

EBITDA is one of the most widely used measures of operating performance, yet it is also frequently misunderstood or applied without sufficient context. This course provides a practical foundation for interpreting EBITDA accurately and using it alongside other financial metrics to support stronger business decisions.

Participants will examine how EBITDA is calculated from the income statement, including both direct and indirect approaches, and how adjusted EBITDA may differ from the standard calculation. The course explores comparisons with net income, operating income, and free cash flow, as well as EBITDA's role in peer analysis, valuation, financial modeling, credit analysis, private equity, and M&A. It also highlights common red flags, including aggressive normalization adjustments and EBITDA growth that is not supported by cash flow.

Major Topic:

  • EBITDA fundamentals and calculation methods
  • Adjusted EBITDA and common normalization items
  • EBITDA compared with net income, operating income, and cash flow
  • Valuation, financial modeling, and EV/EBITDA multiples
  • Credit analysis, private equity, and M&A applications
  • Red flags and limitations in EBITDA analysis

By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to evaluate what EBITDA reveals, recognize what it excludes, and communicate EBITDA results more clearly. The course emphasizes responsible use of the metric by pairing EBITDA with other indicators of liquidity, cash generation, leverage, and overall financial health.
