The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has appointed Kurt Hohl as its new Chief Accountant, effective July 7. Hohl, who has nearly four decades of experience in accounting and auditing, is expected to strengthen accounting and auditing standards, bolster transparency, and reinforce financial reporting integrity to enhance investor trust in capital markets.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has announced the appointment of Kurt Hohl as its new chief accountant, effective July 7. Hohl brings nearly four decades of experience in accounting and auditing, marking a significant leadership addition during a period of dynamic regulatory and market evolution.

With deep technical acumen and extensive international exposure, Hohl’s return to the SEC signals a strategic emphasis on reinforcing financial reporting integrity and enhancing investor trust. SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins, who previously worked alongside Hohl, emphasized the importance of the role and praised Hohl’s integrity and capabilities, noting his potential to positively impact markets and investor outcomes.

Hohl expressed enthusiasm for his return, calling it a “pivotal time” for capital markets. He outlined his focus on working closely with the Office of the Chief Accountant to strengthen accounting and auditing standards in ways that foster innovation and bolster transparency. His appointment aligns with the SEC’s broader mission to ensure that evolving financial environments remain accountable and investor-oriented.

Acting Chief Accountant Ryan Wolfe, who has held the position since January 2025, will resume his role as chief accountant in the Division of Enforcement. Wolfe’s prior service included tenure as senior associate chief accountant in the Office of the Chief Accountant, where he supported critical regulatory efforts.

Hohl’s appointment marks a return to familiar territory for both the new chief accountant and Chairman Atkins. Together, their combined leadership experience is expected to steer the SEC’s accounting oversight at a time when market clarity and confidence remain top priorities.

Until next time…
