Certified Internal Auditor, one who is responsible for the assessment of a company’s internal controls, reliability of financial statements, and also the risk management systems. Getting CIA certification is quite a prestigious deal in itself but maintaining the same is another.

To maintain the Certification intact a CIA has to complete certain CPE hours provided by the IIA’s Professional Certification Board (PCB). Completing these CPE hours shows your utmost commitment to keeping your knowledge and skills updated with the latest trends and changes in the industry.

CIA CPE Requirements

Every year CPE requirements for CIA depend upon whether you are a practicing CIA or a non-practising CIA. As a practicing CIA, you need to complete 40 hours of CPE during your re-certification cycle whereas it is a 20-hour CPE requirement if you are a non-practising CIA.

Both i.e. practicing as well as non-practicing CIA needs to ensure completion of a minimum of 2 hours of CPE on ethics within those 40 or 20 hours respectively. You also need to keep in mind that your license renewal process has to be completed before 31st December every year.

Those individuals who have multiple or any other qualification along with CIA like CCSA, CGAP, CFSA, CRMA, and QIAL and have earned CPE for those qualifications which are aligned with the CPE requirements of CIA then those CPE hours can be counted for IIA CIA CPE requirements too.

Process of Reporting CIA CPE

Once you have ensured effective completion of your CIA CPE hours you can report them before 31st December using the IIA’s CCMS portal or through the CPE course provider by submitting a CPE reporting form which serves as a signed statement that all applicable CPE requirements have been met.

Relevant industry-specific educational programs that are provided by other professional organizations or societies.
College or university courses passed (credit and noncredit courses), excluding courses that a candidate must take to meet the examination requirement for a bachelor's degree or its equivalent.
Formal correspondence and self-study programs relevant to internal auditing that meet program criteria, including evidence of completion.
Calculating CIA CPE hours
For calculating the CPE hours PCB board considers a 50-minute program as one CPE hour. In self-paced courses, normally, an individual obtains 1 credit for a runtime of 50 minutes of an approved CPE course.

So, for example, if you have achieved a runtime of 250 minutes in an approved CPE program then you will be awarded with 5 credits of CPE.
