MYCPE ONE

The spreadsheets. The deadlines. The document chasing. The “quick” client requests. I've been there. Now I'm figuring out what CPE, offshore support, technology, AI, and digital marketing can actually take off my plate.

I'm Dave. I'm an accountant based in New York, and I'm the newest voice on the MYCPE ONE blog. I work with numbers, clients, deadlines, and everything else that comes with the job.

From here on, I'll be sharing what I'm learning about CPE, offshore support, accounting technology, and AI: what actually saves time, what doesn't, and what only sounds good in a presentation. If you have ever finished a long day and realized how little of it was actual accounting, you already know why I'm here.

I've been there. Honestly, I'm still there.

Key Takeaways

  • Dave is an accountant, not a technology expert, an outsourcing expert, or a guru with all the answers.
  • A large share of an accountant's day goes to work that sits around accounting, not accounting itself.
  • Working smarter is rarely one decision. It is usually a mix of continuing education, people, process, and technology.
  • Offshore support does not mean handing over ownership of the client or the work.
  • AI is useful as a tool. It is not a replacement for professional judgment.
  • You'll find Dave on the MYCPE ONE blog, on social channels, and in your inbox.

What Does A Typical Day Actually Look like for an accountant?

If you're in accounting, you probably know what I mean when I say the job isn't always about accounting.

There's the spreadsheet that needs updating. The document you're still waiting for. The client who needs something “really quickly.” The deadline that somehow got moved forward. And the email that starts with: “It's just a small change, Dave.”

None of that shows up in a job description. All of it shows up in your calendar.

I Like Accounting.. I just don't love everything around it.

I became an accountant because I enjoy working with numbers, solving problems, and helping clients make sense of their financial information.

But there's another side to the job. There are repetitive tasks. There are administrative tasks. There are things that need to get done but don't necessarily need me to do them.

That last one is what changed how I think about my work. Not just about AI. Not just about technology. But about how accountants can get more done without having to do every single thing themselves.

Where Does MYCPE ONE Fit into my world?

I first came across MYCPE ONE through something every accountant knows well: CPE.

Keeping up with continuing education is part of professional life. I need to earn my credits, stay current, and keep track of everything I've completed. MYCPE ONE helps me manage that in one place.

But the more I explored the platform, the more I realized CPE is only one part of what they do. From professional education to offshore staffing, technology, digital marketing, website development, and AI, MYCPE ONE works with accountants, accounting firms, and financial organisations across different parts of their professional journey. Today it supports more than 250,000 accounting professionals and thousands of firms across the US, UK, and Canada.

And that got me thinking. If I can get help staying current, what if I could get help with the work around my accounting, too?

What Does Offshore Support Actually look like day to day?

Take Sarah. She's a colleague of mine, and like me, she has her own list of things that need to get done every day.

Some of the work she handles is supported by an offshore accounting professional through MYCPE ONE. That does not mean Sarah has handed over her job. Far from it. She still owns the work, makes the decisions, and works directly with the client.

She just doesn't have to do every task herself.

I think that's an important distinction, and it's one a lot of accountants get wrong. Outsourcing isn't about doing less. It's about creating the capacity to do more of the work that actually needs your expertise.

What About Marketing? I barely have time for it.

I know I need to be more visible. But when do I find time for marketing?

That's another problem I've started thinking about. Accounting firms need a strong online presence, but between clients, deadlines, CPE and everything else on the list, marketing can easily move to the bottom of it.

A website, digital marketing and a consistent online presence can help firms get found, build credibility and create opportunities. But figuring out what actually works is a different question.

So I'm exploring that too.

Where Does AI Genuinely Help, and where does it not?

Let's talk about my boss for a minute. If there's one thing accountants everywhere have in common, it's getting a new priority right when the day finally looked manageable.

So I've started experimenting with AI for some of the repetitive work:

  • Finding information I'd otherwise dig for
  • Getting a first draft together
  • Summarizing something I don't want to read three times
  • Preparing for a client conversation

I'm still learning, and that's the point

AI is useful when you treat it as a tool rather than a magic solution. It gets things wrong. It sounds confident when it shouldn't. It needs a review from someone who knows the subject, which in my case is me.

But now, when my boss asks, “Dave, can you get this done today?” I've started thinking: let's see what I can get AI to handle first.

CPE, staffing, technology, and AI: Which One Solves Which Problem?

The more I look at these, the less they feel like separate conversations. They're all connected to one bigger question: how can accountants work smarter?

Here's roughly how I've started sorting it out.

What you are dealing withWhere I'd look firstWhat it actually solvesWhat it will not fix
Falling behind on credits or compliance updatesCPE and continuing educationStaying current, staying compliant, tracking credits in one placeA workload problem
Not enough hours in the dayOffshore accounting supportCapacity, coverage during busy season, and bandwidth for advisory workA broken process. It will scale it
The same manual task repeated across every clientAccounting technology and automationConsistency, fewer handoffs, less rekeyingWork that needs judgment
Research, first drafts, and summaries eating your morningAI toolsSpeed on low-judgment tasksAccuracy. You still review everything

Sometimes working smarter means keeping your CPE organized. Sometimes it means getting the right support from an offshore professional. Sometimes it means removing unnecessary manual work. And sometimes it means figuring out where AI genuinely makes a difference.

The important part is knowing when to use what.

How I Decide What To Keep, delegate, or automate

This is the part I get asked about most, so here's the short version of how I think through it.

  • Start with the task, not the tool. Buying software before you understand the workflow just makes the workflow faster at being wrong.
  • Track where your time actually goes for two weeks. Most accountants are surprised. I was.
  • Keep anything that needs judgment, client relationship, or your sign-off. That's your value.
  • Delegate what is repeatable and reviewable. If you can write down how it's done, someone else can do it.
  • Automate what is high-frequency and low-judgment. Reconciliations, reminders, data movement.
  • Review the output every time. Delegating a task does not delegate the responsibility.
Keep it yourselfDelegate itAutomate it

Common Mistakes Accountants make when trying to work smarter

  • Buying tools before fixing the process. Automation on top of a messy workflow just gives you a faster mess.
  • Treating outsourcing as sending work away. Offshore support works when you keep ownership, set standards, and review the output.
  • Expecting AI to be right. It's a first draft, not a final answer.
  • Leaving CPE to the last month of the reporting period. It turns learning into a checkbox.
  • Trying to change everything in one quarter. Pick one task, fix it, then move on.

So What Can You Expect From Me?

I'm not an AI expert. I'm not an outsourcing expert. I'm an accountant. And I suspect that's exactly why I'm interested in all of this.

I want to understand what actually works in the real world. What saves time. What makes work easier. What helps me focus on the things that need my judgment and experience. And what simply sounds good in a presentation but doesn't help when you're staring at a spreadsheet at 6:30 PM.

So I'll explore all of it:

  • CPE: what I'm learning and how I keep my professional development on track
  • Offshore support: how accountants and firms use the right people and processes to create capacity
  • Technology: the tools that take manual work off my plate, and the ones that don't
  • AI: what I test, what works, and what quietly fails
  • Digital growth: how accounting firms can build a stronger online presence, use websites and digital marketing, and grow.

Because being an accountant isn't about choosing between people, processes, or technology. It's about knowing how to bring them together.

Where Will You Find Me?

You'll be seeing more of me across MYCPE ONE.

As the Dave community grows, you may eventually find me on my own channels too. For now, you'll mostly find me right here.

Welcome To Dave's World

Accounting hasn't gotten simpler. The deadlines are still there. So are the “quick” requests and the small changes that aren't small.

What has changed is how much help is available, and how many accountants are still doing everything themselves out of habit. That's the gap I want to write about.

I'm Dave. I'm an accountant. I've been there. And I'm looking for smarter ways to work.

Start where I did: with your CPE. MYCPE ONE gives new users 3 free CPE credits, so you can see how it works before you commit to anything.

No. Dave is an accountant. He tests these tools and approaches in his own work and shares what actually helps, including the things that don't.

No. In a well-run model, the accountant or firm keeps ownership of the client relationship, the decisions, and the final review. The offshore professional supports defined, repeatable tasks within that structure.

MYCPE ONE started with continuing education and now supports accounting professionals and firms across offshore staffing, accounting technology, digital marketing, website development, and AI, serving more than 250,000 professionals and thousands of firms across the US, UK, and Canada.

No. AI can speed up research, drafting, and summarizing, but it cannot carry professional judgment, client responsibility, or accountability for the final work product. It works best as a first-draft tool with a qualified reviewer.
