CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR NEVADA CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUTANTS (CPA)

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a designation given by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to individuals that pass the Uniform CPA Examination and meet the education and experience requirements. The CPA designation helps enforce professional standards in the accounting industry. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is the highest accounting credential in the United States. CPA ensures global recognition for accounting & finance professionals.

The Board of Accountancy provides assurance to the public that the CPA profession in Nevada operates at the highest level of professional competence through, verification of education and experience credentials. 

NEVADA (NV) CPA CPE REQUIREMENT OVERVIEW

CPE Requirements
80 hours every two-years with a minimum of 20 hours per year
License Renewal Period
January 31, Annually
CPE Reporting Cycle
January 1 to December 31, 2-year rolling reporting cycle.
Ethics Requirement
Four (4) hours every 2-year rolling reporting cycle.
Carry Over Credits
Nevada CPA cannot carry forward credits in the next reporting cycle 
Subject Area Restriction

Nevada CPA requires 80 hours of CPE to be completed in every 2-year rolling period with a minimum of 20 hours completed every year, and must be reported to the Board by January 31 biennially as part of the renewal process

All licensed CPAs in Nevada must complete 80 hours of approved continuing education every 2-year rolling period with a minimum of 20 hours per year. Nevada State Board of Accountancy has a mandatory requirement that Nevada (NV) CPA has to earn at least 4 hours of CPE in subject area of ethics. Regulatory AICPA Ethics, Circular 230 Ethics or Behavioural Ethics all subject areas are approved for qualifying as ethics. The Nevada (NV) CPA license renewal period ends on January 31 every year.

A 2-year rolling reporting cycle for Nevada (NV) CPA is from January 1 to December 31 .

Qualified programs of continuing education dealing with the following general subjects are acceptable:


  • Accounting and auditing;
  • Taxation;
  • Management;
  • Computer science;
  • Communication arts;
  • Mathematics, statistics, probability and quantitative applications in business;
  • Economics;
  • Business law;
  • Functional fields of business, including finance, production, marketing, personnel relations, and business management and organization;
  • Specialized areas of industry, including the film industry, real estate and farming; and
  • Administrative practice, including engagement letters and personnel.

Subjects other than those listed above may be acceptable if the applicant can demonstrate that they contribute to his or her professional competence. The applicant is responsible for demonstrating that a particular program is acceptable.

A Nevada CPA has to complete minimum of 8 hours in courses that focus on accounting and auditing in each year in which the applicant performed work on any audit, review, full disclosure compilation or attestation services.

  • Formal educational programs of a firm.
  • Programs of other accounting, industrial or professional organizations.
  • Meetings of committees of professional societies which are structured as formal educational programs.
  • Dinner, luncheon and breakfast meetings which are structured as formal educational programs.
  • Meetings of firms for staff groups or management groups, or both, which are structured as formal educational programs.

An applicant for the renewal of a permit to engage in the practice of public accounting must list on the application the number of hours of continuing education completed by the applicant during the previous calendar year.  You should keep your copies in case the board performs an audit of your CPE, you will be responsible for submitting copies of your certificates of completion and/or verification of courses at the time of the audit. You must retain your documentation for at least three (3) years after the applicant files the application.

If you submit your renewal on-line the renewal fee will be $120 for Nevada CPAs

If you submit your renewal by mail the renewal fee will be $140 for Nevada CPAs

A Nevada (NV) CPA can complete all 80 CPE credits hours via self-study courses. i.e., a Nevada (NV) CPA can complete 100% of the required CPE hours via self-study courses and 40 CPE Package of myCPE is 100% compliant to that requirement.

A registrant must report, at a minimum, the CPE hours required for the registration renewal period. Hours that exceed the number required for the current registration renewal period may not be carried forward to a subsequent registration renewal period.

Any Nevada (NV) CPA who fails to complete the CPE by December 31st is in non-compliance.

For the late completion of continuing education requirements, an administrative fine is imposed in the following amounts:

  1. If completed 1 calendar month late $100
  2. If completed 2 to 3 calendar months late $350
  3. If completed 4 to 5 calendar months late $850
  4. If completed 6 to 7 calendar months late $1,600
