CPE Requirements

CPAs can choose either the 24-hour or 40-hour rule each year

40-hour rule:

  • 40 hours of CPE in any combination of fields of study
  • At least 4 hours of New York-specific ethics every 3 years

24-hour rule:

  • 24 hours of CPE in a single field of study
  • At least 4 hours of New York-specific ethics every 3 years

Four (4) hours of ethics every 3-years must be approved by the New York Board of Accountancy

  • The four (4) hours of professional ethics may be counted toward the annual contact hour requirement in the calendar year that they are taken.
Carry Over Credits
New York CPA cannot carry forward credits in the next reporting cycle 
Subject Area Restriction
  • New York CPA cannot complete CPE in subject areas other than accounting, auditing, taxation, advisory services, specialized knowledge, and such other areas appropriately related to the practice of accounting.
  • Self-realization, Spirituality, Personal health or fitness, Sports and recreation, Foreign languages or cultures; and any other subjects that do not contribute directly to the licensee's professional competence are not allowed for CPE.

New York CPA requires 40 hours or 24 hours of CPE to be completed every year and must be reported to the Board by December 31 every year as part of the renewal process.

In order to be eligible for CPE credit, regardless of the subject area, a course must contribute to the development or maintenance of professional knowledge. Credit will not be given for courses that focus on the marketing of professional services or improving the profitability of an accounting firm or practice.

  • New York CPA cannot complete CPE in subject areas other than accounting, auditing, taxation, advisory services, specialized knowledge, and other areas appropriately related to the practice of accounting.
  • Self-realization, Spirituality, Personal health or fitness, Sports and recreation, Foreign languages or cultures, and any other subjects that do not contribute directly to the licensee's professional competence are not allowed for CPE.


A new licensee shall become subject to the mandatory continuing education requirements from the first January 1st that falls in his or her first registration period.

You do not need to report your CPE compliance on an annual basis. However, on your registration renewal document, you are required to affirm your compliance during the calendar years that ended in the most recent past registration period. You will be responsible for submitting copies of your certificates of completion and/or verification of courses at the time of the audit. You must retain your documentation for at least five (5) years after the completion of educational courses.

No, New York State Board doesn’t allow courses completed via nano learning method to count towards NY CPE requirements.

A registrant must report, at a minimum, the CPE hours required for the registration renewal period. Hours that exceed the number required for the current registration renewal period may not be carried forward to a subsequent registration renewal period.

You are in non-compliance if you do not complete at least 40 or 24 hours of acceptable CPE by December 31:
  • A licensee who has not satisfied the mandatory CPE requirements shall not be issued a triennial registration certificate by the Department and shall not practice unless and until the CPE requirement has been met.
  • The Department, at its discretion, may issue a conditional registration to a licensee who fails to meet the CPE requirements but who agrees to make up any deficiencies and take any additional education that the Department may require.
