Ohio State Board of Accountancy has a mandatory requirement that Ohio (OH) CPA has to earn at least 3 hours of CPE in a 3-year renewal period in professional standards and responsibilities (PSR) approved by the Board.   • Self-realization, Spirituality, Personal health or fitness, Sports and recreation, Foreign languages or cultures; and any other subjects that do not contribute directly to the professional competence of the licensee are not allowed for CPE.

The CPE requirement for newly certified public accountants is 40 credits. The two-year reporting period begins on 1st January of the year in which the CPA obtains the certificate, and ends on 31st December of the year following the year in which the CPA obtained a certificate. There are no minimum annual credit or subject matter requirements during the initial two-year reporting period.

All Ohio permit holders must provide a statement to the board under penalty of perjury attesting to the continuing education credits completed as of the date the Ohio permit is renewed. You will be responsible for submitting copies of your certificates of completion and/or verification of courses at the time of the audit. You must retain your documentation till the end of the next reporting cycle.

A registrant must report, at a minimum, the CPE hours required for the registration renewal period. Hours that exceed the number required for the current registration renewal period may not be carried forward to a subsequent registration renewal period.

You are in non-compliance if you do not complete at least 120 hours of acceptable CPE by December 31:

  • The board may allow an extension to correct the deficiency of CPE hours within one year. The Ohio CPA shall provide the board with an anticipated date of completion and appropriate documentation to the board that describes the circumstances supporting the extension request.
  • If the CPE hours are not completed within the extended period, the permit will be placed into expired status.
  • An Ohio CPA who is deficient in CPE requirements at the time of renewal, and does not receive an extension of time, must pay the late filing fee not exceeding $100 for each full or part month.
  • An Ohio CPA who receives disciplinary action from the board based on failure to comply with CPE requirements will be subject to ongoing education verification for at least two triennial reporting periods.
