The FDCPA was passed and enacted in 1977 to curb abuses by the third-party debt collection industry. Before the passage of the FDCPA, it wasn't uncommon for debt collectors to verbally harass and even physically assault consumers who had outstanding debt. FDCPA is a federal law that limits the behavior and actions of third-party debt collectors who are attempting to collect debts on behalf of another person or entity.
