Course Description

This webinar is for Canadian CPAs only.

As you/your clients/families age and need more care do you want to avoid:

  • Institutionalization?
  • Losing independence and control?
  • Being a burden on family/friends?
  • Financial hardship?
  • Relying on government programs?

We all take delight in planning for vacations and holiday celebrations, but when it comes to planning for old age, we literally run the other way. Aging and death only happen to other people, and therefore we don’t need to talk about it – at least not yet.

Why is this?

  • Many believe the government will provide any needed care.
  • It won’t happen to me.
  • My spouse will look after me.
  • The kids will look after me.

Additional reasons we should care about aging and care are obvious:

  • Every day 10,000 Americans turn 65; the number of older people will more than double over the next several decades to top 88 million
  • Approximately 6 million have Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia; it is becoming a global epidemic
  • COVID-19 has revealed the tremendous weaknesses in the long-term care system

These realities make it abundantly clear that we all need to plan for old age – and not just financially. We need to understand the healthcare system where we live, plan where we wish to age and live out our lives and communicate our wishes to family members, professional advisors, and healthcare providers. COVID-19 has only reinforced the need to plan.

This CPD Course will provide steps seniors and their advisors can take to help enable a stronger, more independent, and healthier future.

As your clients and family age, do you want them to avoid:

Institutionalization?
Losing independence and control?
Being a burden on family/friends?
Financial hardship?
Relying on government programs?

I certainly do. Many years ago I learned what a 14-year long term care experience can mean. That's why I founded the Long Term Care Planning Network, Canada’s leading resource centre for aging and long term care planning and education.

My seminar series, web sites, newsletters and print and electronic tools are recognized as key international long term care educational resources.

I am a well-known speaker, educator, writer, media commentator, publisher and consultant in the field of long term care, who has been published in leading geriatric journals in Canada.

I am also a Certified Professional Consultant on Aging (CPCA.

I work with professional advisors and their clients, as well as Canadian families to help all understand the implications of ageing and the need for care on professional, personal and financial
well-being.

I have created a series of uniquely Canadian educational resources to encourage Canadians to talk about, and prepare for aging long term care including:

  • The 10 - Step Long Term Care Planner
  • It’s never too early to start the care conversation…A
  • Guide For Adult Children & Their Parents
  • Long Term Care: A Practical Planning Guide For
  • Canadians
  • LTC Readiness Questionnaire/User Guide
  • The Critical Illness/Long Term Care Planner
Contact me to help you with:

1. Family caregiving issues; I was a dementia caregiver for 14 years
2. Guidance regarding a plan for your own long term care
3. Information and advice regarding the role of long term care insurance
